Improving the look of YOUR Skin!

skin care ashburn

How your skin looks can have a big impact on your appearance. We all know that as we age the skin structure changes a lot. This process ends up showing our age. Here are some examples of skin changes:

  • Skin layers break down and become thinner. This decreases the fullness of the skin.
  • Suppleness is lost and wrinkles form.
  • Dark spots can appear. Sun damage can manifest in other ways as well.
  • Skin can look loose and it can sag.
  • New skin cells are formed at a slower rate. This causes the old cells to slough away more slowly, leaving more dry dead cells at the surface.
  • Skin can become diseased, and can form skin cancer.

We can fight these negative changes. Topical products that work with the skin can be used to get the best skin health possible. The use of good products along with the advice of medical professionals can have a lasting effect on skin health. The skin can be treated at all layers.

By taking steps to improve the health of the skin, you are not just smoothing the skin. You are also correcting damage, getting rid of lesions, and helping to prevent cancer from forming.

Treatments for these conditions range from topical creams to lasers to surgical options. The treatment options can be customized for your situation. In general, improving the look of skin will involve things like better skin preparation, correction of problem areas, stimulation to prompt internal repair, control over appearance, and protection from further damage.

Here’s a deeper look at each of those aspects:

  • Skin preparation. Proper cleansing and toning of the skin makes it easier to correct any problem areas.
  • Correction of problem areas. This is where medical help comes into play. Correcting problems or reversing damage can take a long time. The skin’s surface may need to be repaired.
  • Stimulation. This is actually part of the correction process, but it deserves special notice. Products and treatments are available that prompt the skin to create more collagen in the lower layers of the skin.
  • Controlling appearance refers to taking actions to prolong the corrections made.
  • Protection is needed to prevent future damage. This focuses on keeping the skin from being exposed to harmful UV rays. Sun exposure is one of the main factors in many of the signs of skin aging and it is also one of the main causes of skin cancer.

Protecting the skin from further damage

We all enjoy the warmth of the sun. Sunlight is needed to help our bodies produce Vitamin D. This vitamin is important in the absorption of calcium. Despite the importance of some sun exposure, too much of the sun’s UV light can cause a long list of skin problems.

Sun protection is one of the most important aspects of maintaining good skin health. Sun exposure causes or contributes significantly to:

  • Premature aging
  • Age spots
  • Skin diseases
  • Wrinkles
  • Loss of skin elasticity
  • Freckles
  • Growths
  • Ulcers
  • Skin cancer

These risks are magnified by use of a tanning bed.

Apply sunscreen often

The importance of protecting the skin from sun damage can’t be overstated. Sun protection includes not just sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, but also proper clothing to reduce the amount of skin exposed. It can also help to stay out of the sun entirely during the peak UV hours. No sunblock will provide all day protection. Most sunscreens only work for a few hours, so reapply at least every 3-4 hours. Be sure to pick one with an SPF of 20 or higher.

Not all sun blocks are equal. Certain sunscreens block specific wavelengths of UV light. The SPF rating on sunscreens refers to how long you can stay in the sun without burning. SPF is an indicator of UVB protection only. Sun blocks usually protect against UVB and some UVA wavelengths.

Unfortunately, the SPF system does not consider UVA light. This is not good because UVA light is associated with skin cancers. The UVA light is best covered by complete blocking agents, like zinc and titanium agents. Be sure to use sun block that blocks out not only the UVB but also the UVA wavelengths.

Vitamins that Promote Good Skin Health

It’s no surprise that a good diet improves the health of the body and it also improves the health of the skin. There are some specific vitamins and minerals that can help to maintain or improve skin function. Here’s a list:

  • Vitamin A is used by the skin cells for cell maintenance. They use it to repair cell damage. It is also an antioxidant.
  • Vitamin B3 is used when healthy new skin cells are created.
  • Vitamin C is used in collagen production. It is also an antioxidant.
  • Vitamin E is used to promote good circulation. This in turn helps tissues repair themselves. It helps minimize the look of scars. It is also an antioxidant.
  • Niacin is used in improving blood flow to the skin.
  • Chromium is used to reduce skin infections.
  • Zinc, like vitamin E, is used to help tissues heal and also to prevent scars.

Protecting the Skin From Acne Damage

While acne can’t always be prevented, there are steps that can be taken to minimize it. Minimizing acne can be beneficial to the long-term health of your skin because it minimizes the chance for skin damage and scarring.

Here are some steps to minimize acne issues:

  • If you wear makeup, always remove it entirely before going to sleep. Also remember to clean out or replace your makeup applicators regularly. Get rid of makeup that is old.
  • Clean your face at least twice a day (morning and night). Clean it again after exercising. Be sure to use a mild soap that is not drying for facial skin.
  • Keep hair off the face. Hair should also be washed daily. This is especially true if your hair is oily.
  • To avoid acne scars, don’t “pop” pimples. Even rubbing the pimples can be problematic.
